I pulled into Rio Hondo on a Tuesday morning and immediately felt like I’d wandered onto a private club by mistake. In Anaheim, we know the real turf is found between the Mouse’s shadow and the 91 freeway, where a decent round usually means dodging sprinklers and rental clubs.

But this list runs from Navy Golf Course’s aircraft-roaring, water-haunted beast to Dad Miller’s forgiving, bar-blessed glove of a municipal track. That’s a spread that’s sharper than a fresh groove on a wedge.

Go on, grab your bag and see where you land.

Rio Hondo Golf Club

Rio Hondo Golf Club
Highlights
Private-club feel, public price
Tight, challenging, entertaining layout
Awesome bar and restaurant
Scenic but demanding course
Summer conditions shine best

I pulled into Rio Hondo on a Tuesday morning and immediately felt like I'd wandered onto a private club by mistake. The parking attendant waved me through with a grin, and the pro shop had that polished, hushed air you usually pay double for. The layout is tight and demanding, the kind that punishes a lazy tee shot with a chorus of rustling trees and a lost ball. But it's entertaining, too, a puzzle you actually want to solve. The bar and restaurant are genuinely excellent, with a cold beer waiting that tastes better because you earned it. Summer is when this place shines, when the fairways firm up and the challenge becomes fair. Bring your A-game and your patience.

Wonderful event staff
Delicious event food
Stunning banquet views
Exemplary service quality

I attended a retirement party at Friendly Hills, and I'll admit I was skeptical. Country club events often feel like reheated chicken and stiff smiles. But the staff here operated with a warmth that felt almost suspicious, like they were secretly plotting a surprise party for me. The food was genuinely delicious, with a carving station that earned a second plate from me, and the banquet room had views of the course that made the speeches bearable. Every request, from extra napkins to a gluten-free option, was handled with a smile and a nod. If you're planning a gathering, this is where you go to look good without lifting a finger. I left full, happy, and mildly concerned I'd been hypnotized.

Highlights
Tournament-ready greens, fairways
Breezy check-in, flexible starters
Ace-worthy practice rounds
Strong value for money
Great condition, private-club feel

La Mirada Golf Course surprised me in the best way. The greens and fairways are tournament-ready, immaculate in a way that makes you feel like you're on the final hole of a televised event, not a Sunday scramble. The check-in was breezy, and the starters were flexible, letting me squeeze in a practice round without any grumbling. It's a strong value, too, which in this economy feels like finding a twenty in an old jacket. I played nine, aced a par three (okay, it was a lucky bounce, but I'll take it), and left wondering why I don't live closer. If you want private-club conditions without the membership committee's judgmental stares, this is your spot.

Charming course-side event space
Friendly, professional hospitality staff
Onsite restaurant with fair prices
Great views from the patio
Reliable hosting for private gatherings

Anaheim Hills Golf Club has a charming course-side event space that feels like a treehouse for adults. I attended a small wedding here, and the patio views were the real star, overlooking rolling fairways as the sun dipped low. The hospitality staff were friendly and professional, handling a spilled glass of wine with the calm of a bomb squad. The onsite restaurant has fair prices, which is rare for a venue that knows it has you captive. I grabbed a burger and a beer, watched a few golfers slice into the rough, and thought, 'I could host a birthday here and not be embarrassed.' Reliable, unpretentious, and with a view that does the heavy lifting.

Highlights
Affordable 18 with cart
Friendly staff, great bar
Forgiving for beginners
Decent greens for price
Fun, challenging layout

Dad Miller is the golf equivalent of a well-worn baseball glove: not fancy, but it fits. For the price of an 18 with a cart, you get a fun, challenging layout that won't bankrupt you or your ego. The greens are decent, which is high praise from me, a man who has putted on carpets smoother than some municipal courses. The staff is friendly, and the bar is a proper establishment where you can nurse a drink and recount your near-birdies. It's forgiving for beginners, so you won't feel judged when you shank one into the rough. I played a round, laughed at myself more than I'd like, and left with a smile. That's a win in my book.

Gorgeous, fast, sloping greens
Tricky water on many holes
Military aircraft fly overhead
Welcoming staff, clean facility
Solid 27-hole course layout

Navy Golf Course is a beast with a friendly face. The greens are gorgeous, fast, and sloping in ways that make you question your geometry skills. Water lurks on too many holes, mocking your tee shot like a seagull eyeing your fries. But then a military aircraft roars overhead, and you remember you're playing on hallowed ground. The staff is welcoming, the facility is clean, and the 27-hole layout keeps things interesting across three distinct nines. I lost three balls to the drink, but the beauty of the course softened the blow. It's a solid test that rewards precision over power. Bring extra balls and a sense of humor.

Challenging greens for beginners
Welcoming staff knows your name
Safe and comfortable for solo women
Refurbished course, much nicer conditions
Great putting green practice areas

Tustin Ranch Golf Club is the kind of place where the staff actually learns your name, which is either endearing or unsettling depending on your mood. I played solo as a woman, and I felt completely safe and comfortable, which is sadly not always a given. The course was recently refurbished, and the improved conditions show, with fairways that don't feel like a minefield of bare patches. The greens are challenging, especially for a beginner, so be prepared to three-putt with dignity. The putting green is excellent for practice, and I spent a good twenty minutes there pretending I knew what I was doing. It's a welcoming, well-kept course that respects your time and your money.

Modern upscale public venue
Family friendly with restaurant
Great birthday celebration spot
Organic vegetables on site
Fun festival atmosphere nearby

Strawberry Farms is a modern, upscale public venue that somehow manages to feel both polished and family friendly. I came for a birthday party, and the restaurant had a festive buzz, with kids running around and adults sipping drinks on the patio. The organic vegetables on site are a quirky touch, and I half-expected a farm-to-table lecture, but it was just fresh and tasty. The nearby festival atmosphere adds to the cheer, with music drifting over the course like a pleasant soundtrack. It's a great spot for a celebration, even if you're not playing golf. I ate too much cake, watched a few swings, and left with a sugar coma. Worth it.

Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort

Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort
Highlights
Challenging doglegs and narrow fairways
Sunset views over Chino Hills
Signature par 3 with pond
Resort atmosphere, welcoming guests
Back nine's peaceful, forested design

Industry Hills at Pacific Palms is a resort that demands respect, with doglegs that twist like a pretzel and fairways narrow enough to give you claustrophobia. The sunset views over Chino Hills are worth the green fee alone, painting the sky in shades of orange that made me forget my triple bogey. The signature par 3 with its pond is a photographer's dream and a golfer's nightmare. The back nine feels like a different course, peaceful and forested, a welcome reprieve from the front's assault. The resort atmosphere is welcoming, and you half-expect a concierge to appear with a towel after a rough hole. It's demanding, but oh, so rewarding when you pull it off.

Warm welcome from Mr. Marshall
Impeccable course and greens
Hilly, magnificent, and beautiful
Creative short par-four layouts
Lightning-fast greens require touch

Coyote Hills is a magnificent beast, and I mean that in the most flattering way. From the moment I arrived, Mr. Marshall greeted me like an old friend, which set a warm tone that carried through the round. The course is hilly, gorgeous, and relentless, with creative short par fours that make you think instead of just bomb away. The greens are lightning-fast, so fast that I half-expected them to sue me for putting too hard. I three-putted more times than I care to admit, but I couldn't blame the greens; they were immaculate. The views from the higher holes are stunning, and the layout flows like a well-written novel. Bring your touch, not your ego.

Costa Mesa Country Club

Costa Mesa Country Club
Highlights
Grass tees, well-kept greens
Four par-fives for variety
Challenging doglegs and ponds
Classic, old-school country feel

Costa Mesa Country Club feels like a relic from a better time, in the best way. The grass tees are a luxury I didn't know I needed, and the greens are well-kept, rolling true without any sneaky tricks. With four par fives, there's plenty of room to open up your shoulders, but the doglegs and ponds keep you honest. It's a classic, old-school country feel, the kind where you expect a member to offer you a cigar and a tip on your swing. I played a round that was equal parts fun and frustrating, which is exactly what I want. The course doesn't try to be trendy; it just is. And that's a compliment.

Scenic lake-lined fairways
Short course, big fun
Elevated tee box views
Easy cart navigation
Convenient cafe on-site

Birch Hills Golf Course is what happens when a short course decides it's going to be the life of the party. The lake-lined fairways are scenic enough to distract you from your slice, and the elevated tee boxes offer views that make you feel like a king surveying his realm. It's not long, but it's big on fun, with a layout that rewards creativity over raw power. The cart navigation is easy, so you can focus on the game instead of avoiding potholes. The on-site cafe serves decent coffee and snacks, just enough to fuel you for another round or a post-game sandwich. I finished in two hours, smiled the whole time, and wondered why more courses aren't like this. Short, sweet, and satisfying.
